Historical Facts

The first residents of Voorhees Township were members of the Lenni-Lenape Nation of the Algonquian People, also known as “Grandfather” or the “Original People.”

In 1623, Cornelius Mey claimed the Delaware River for Holland. Both Swedish and Dutch settlers moved into the Delaware Valley, battling over who would control New Jersey. The Dutch won, taking control in 1655. England took the territory away from Holland and established New Jersey as a British colony in 1664.

Named after the governor who authorized the township’s creation, Voorhees Township was incorporated March 1, 1899.

In 1900, the population of Voorhees Township was 979. By 1950, the population had doubled. Rapid growth occurred between 1950 and 1990, and 24,559 people lived in Voorhees Township as of the 1990 U.S. Census.

Demographics

The western part of the township encompasses an area known as Echelon, a census-designated place in 2010 that had a population of 10,743. The population of Voorhees Township itself was 29,131. Median family income was $107,000.

Voorhees Township Public Schools oversees four elementary schools and one middle school. Youth who have graduated from eighth grade go to schools located in Voorhees Township that are part of the Eastern Camden County Regional High School District.
