History

The Delaware Valley was home to the Lenni-Lenape Indians, who helped European settlers adapt to their new surroundings. William Evans, the first European settler, acquired 323 acres in the mid-1600s. Called Evesham, it included the rise known today as Mount Laurel. Several more families settled in the area, with the Darnells acquiring large tracts of land in the early 1700s. The family homestead still stands today.

In 1760, the Friends Meeting House was built at the Hainesport-Mount Laurel Road intersection. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the structure is the oldest continuously used meeting house in the United States.

In 1778, General Clinton occupied the Thomas Smith House on the Hainesport-Mount Laurel Road. The oldest portion dates to 1738, with several later additions. Also listed in the National Register, the building is important as an early homestead and for its association with the Revolutionary War.

Paulsdale, the birthplace of Alice Stokes Paul, was built around 1800 as part of the 173-acre family farmstead. It is a National Historic Landmark, important for the efforts of Alice Paul, who campaigned for women’s voting rights and wrote the Equal Rights Amendment.

Community Resources

The township supports several parks, a community center and pavilion. Activities include team sports, senior activities, fishing, concerts and winter sledding. PAWS Farm gives interactive nature programs for small children on the Darnell farmstead.
