Historical Facts

Members of the Lenni-Lenape Nation, Moorestown’s earliest known inhabitants, raised crops to supplement their harvests of seafood and wild game.

John and Sarah Roberts, the first English-speaking settlers, arrived in 1682. Others followed, including Thomas Moore and his wife Elizabeth. In 1732, Moore purchased 33 acres of land upon which he built a hotel. Moorestown is named after him.

In 1839, Moorestown farmer Edward Harris II introduced draft horses to the United States by importing Percherons from France. Percheron Park commemorates that historic shipment.

In 1969, founding members of the Historical Society of Moorestown purchased the Smith-Cadbury Mansion, built in the early 1700s. Open to the public, the mansion now houses an extensive collection of historical documents and artifacts.

Demographics

Located within the boundaries of Moorestown Township lies the unincorporated community of Moorestown-Lenola, which had a population of 14,217 in 2010. The same year, 20,726 persons resided in Moorestown Township itself, living in 7,450 households. Of these households, approximately 38 percent included children under age 18. Median household income was $108,655.

Schools

Public schools include four elementary schools, a middle school, and Moorestown High School. Some high school and post-secondary students from Moorestown attend the Burlington County Institute of Technology in either Westampton Township or Medford.
